Harrington STP – What to do when a Centreflow Screen Doesn’t Cut It
March 4, 2025
Retrofitting new screening technology into an existing inlet works poses challenges when newer technology, such as one with high screening capture, is proposed.
Increasing screening capture provides increased efficiency in the downstream process with less maintenance requirements. Moving from a step-type screen to a perforated plate screen can lead to almost double the screenings capture.

Retrofitting any screen into an existing hydraulic grade requires careful consideration to headloss and water levels.
The Challenge
- Increase screenings capture in an existing channel
- Minimise hydraulic adjustments
- No civil modifications
The Solution
- HUBER EscaMax® Through Flow Band Screen – UK WIR tested for 84% capture.
- Through flow profile allowed the plant capacity to be met with a small impact on headloss.
- Centreflow profiles could not meet the capacity, as the channel width relative to the machine width resulted in very high headloss in the outlet velocity of the centre flow type (ie a wider channel would be required).
- This site is an example of how through flow band screens can provide benefit to certain inlet works retrofits.
- Proven in ANZ installations with references in operation for 10 years.

HUBER’s EscaMax® is a through flow band screen that uses a perforated band. It has been certified for 84% capture by the UK WIR for 6mm perforations. The screen is ideal for retrofitting as it physically resembles a step type screen.
